Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars Look to Overtake Electric Autos

In the recent months, we've seen a slew of automakers vow to create hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This has come after the outpouring of Electric Vehicles into the market, so why this next step? Well, hydrogen fuel cells only emission is water vapor. That's right, zero harmful emissions!

A fuel cell powered car can travel longer than an EV before it needs to be refueled, too. Fuel cells can also be made into SUVs and trucks more easily as well. Hyundai has recently announced the fuel cell addition to its line up, which will be the Tucson. They plan to make up to 1,000 fuel cell cars by 2015 and 10,000 per year afterwards.

We're not sure when exactly these will come into our market, but when we do we'll let you know! In the meantime, check out our new Hyundai Tucson inventory here.

Drive for Excellence in Full Swing - Limited Entries So Far

The Drive for Excellence program is created to encourage strong school performance in high school students in both Vermont and New York. Now in its sixth year, the program has granted five previous students with either a new Subaru Impreza or a new Hyundai Elantra. Previous winners include Shane Mason of Milton High School in 2008, Sarah Cameron of Colchester High School in 2009, Crystal LaHart of Peru Senior High School in 2010 and Zoe Davis of West Rutland High School for 2011.

Over the course of the school year, students may submit their report cards to Burlington Hyundai Subaru right up until 7 p.m. on April 26, 2013. Students are granted two points for each A on their report card and one for each B. Previous years were given credit for perfect attendance, but this proved to have too many discrepancies so that portion was removed.

“We absolutely value perfect attendance and wish there was a better way to count it. Do we say perfect attendance is perfect attendance period? Or is it fine if they missed for a sports game, college fair, the flu – we didn’t want to take away from students that were missing school for good reason, so we took it out,” said Drive for Excellence Program Administrator Cara Gorman.

Zachary LaForest - 2012 Drive for Excellence Winner!
So far this year Burlington Hyundai Subaru has only received 142 registrations, so if you’re a student and think you don’t have a chance of winning, definitely think again, said Gorman. Burlington Hyundai Subaru chooses 75 finalists at the end of the submission dates to enter the raffle to win the new Impreza or Elantra.

“So far we’ve had opposite choices each year. It’s gone Elantra, Impreza, Elantra, Impreza, Elantra – so we’re thinking whoever wins this year will probably pick the Impreza, but that’s just our superstition,” said Gorman, referring to the staff who always try to guess which car the winner will pick.

To enter to win a new car from Burlington Subaru Hyundai, visit http://www.burlingtoncars.com/drive-for-excellence-register.htm and fill out a registration form, or stop by Burlington Hyundai Subaru to drop off your report card in person.

Hyundai Moving Ahead with Fuel Cell Powered Tucson

Hyundai is about ready to put a fuel cell powered Tucson into "small-scale mass-production", saying that by 2015 they'll have reached roughly 1000 units, which will mostly be in Europe. After 2015 we'll start seeing the fuel cell Tucson with up to 10,000 units per year, mostly in CA and Europe.

The range on a full tank of hydrogen is 367 miles, with a tank capacity of 12 pounds of hydrogen. According to Motor Trend, who has driven a prototype of the vehicle, it's as smooth and silent as an EV (Electric Vehicle), has the same passenger space as the gasoline model, and the trunk floor is only a few inches higher.

Hyundai alongside Honda, Daimler, Nissan and Toyota, is working with local and city governments in Europe in order to get hydrogen-filling stations in place.

This is really exciting breakthrough technology! As it will take a little bit to get here, though, you should take a look at our current Hyundai Tucson inventory in the meantime ;)

Stay tuned for more info! We'll post it as we get it.

Burlington Hyundai Subaru Offering Humane Society Calendar with Purchase of New Vehicle

In conjunction with a Humane Society of Chittenden County (HSCC) fundraiser, Burlington Hyundai Subaru is now offering a free “Pin-ups, Pups & Pussycats” calendar with purchase of new Subaru or Hyundai vehicle.

Burlington Hyundai Subaru recently aided the HSCC with a pet adoption day, now they are continuing their partnership by providing the HSCC’s calendar to customers. The HSCC created a calendar that features 11 of their female employees and their shelter photographer alongside 12 local men and their pets in an old-fashioned pin-up calendar for 2013. This is created to raise money for the shelter.

“This calendar challenged the staff to leave their comfort zones and comfort clothes and accept being front and center – rather than behind the scenes of animal care – to promote animal welfare… But in the end, I think one and all would say we had a lot of fun,” wrote HSCC Director of Development & Outreach, Megan Stearns on the HSCC website page dedicated to the calendar.

The calendars are available to purchase at $19.95 each or $16 each when you spend a minimum of $25 on their online Holiday Store, which offers free shipping. The calendar is also available for sale at HSCC and can be ordered by phone or email.

Contributors to the production of the calendar include photographer Kelly Schultze of Mountain Dog Photography, hair and makeup stylist Jessica A. Pelkey of Salon Elixer, wardrobe donations from the Clothing Line and Bella Boutique, design by Suzanne Fey of oh!suzannah and printing by Queen City Printers.

“We are also immensely grateful for the outpouring of support we received from the community at large for this project – especially the dozen men and their pets who posed – and hope that this calendar brings joy to many animal lovers,” wrote Stearns. Steve Kelson, general manager of Burlington Hyundai Subaru participated as one of the 12 men in the calendar shoot alongside his dog Rylee, and is excited to be a part of the program to aid the shelter.

“We’re always eager to help support people in our local community, and with this calendar we can help raise money for animals, which we love. It was definitely an entertaining experience posing for the photos, but we had a lot of fun,” said Kelson, whose picture is featured for February.

If you purchase a new Hyundai or Subaru vehicle from Burlington Hyundai Subaru, request a calendar at the time of purchase to receive the 2013 “Pin-ups, Pups & Pussycats” calendar.

For more information, please contact Steve Kelson at (802) 660-8099 ex. 156 or Megan Stearns at (802) 862-0135 ex. 15 or visit the HSCC calendar website page here.

Hyundai - Best Certified Pre-Owned Program

According to IntelliChoice, the two best certified pre-owned programs in the automotive industry are Hyundai's and Volvo's. IntelliChoice is a provider of automotive cost and value analysis, and being a  certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle more or less means that the vehicle comes with a warranty and has gone through a vigorous safety inspection.

The IntelliChoice study split CPO programs into two categories; Premium and Popular. Premium had 12 different brands, which included Acura, Audi, BMW, Lexus and Volvo, while Popular had brands like Chrysler, Ford, Honda and Hyundai.

IntelliChoice then analyzed each brand's performance based on a list of criteria, which namely came down to the warranty and inspection processes. For 2012, Volvo took the prize for Premium and Hyundai took the prize for Popular.

Hyundai received a 100-point inspection score and the second-highest warranty score. Also, Hyundai currently offers the longest powertrain coverage of them all at 10 years/100,000 miles.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Car Seat Check

Kicking Tires of Cars.com posted a "car seat check" for the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. For the check, they used a Graco SnugRide 30 rear-facing infant safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible child-safety seat and a Graco high-back TurboBooster seat. Before testing, they adjusted the front seats to hold a six-foot driver and five-foot-eight passenger. Here's what they have to say:

The latch system is successful. There are two sets of lower anchors in the seats, which aren't set too deeply but the cushions are firm and block access. The booster seat sits snugly in the slightly-bolstered seats. Kids who are trying to buckle up themselves may have a slight issue since the buckles sink slightly into pockets in the leather.

In the rear-facing position, the convertible seat needed some extra room so the passenger seat had to be moved forward. The five-foot-eight passenger still had comfortable room. In the forward-facing position, the head restraint pushed the seat forward; so either the head restraint must be removed or the seat can be angled slightly back to accommodate the seat.

The infant seat needed more space as well; the front passenger seat had to be moved up once more. Kicking Tires says that two car seats fit comfortably in the second row. This IIHS Top Safety Pick turns out to be a child-friendly vehicle as well :)

If you'd like to take a look, please view our 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport selection here.

Common Objections and FAQs About Purchasing Winter Tires

Before we get started, be sure to comment below the characters name to the right and what show he is on to be entered to win $100 towards new winter tires! Contest ends Oct. 30 and the winner will be announced on Oct. 31! See our Winter Is Coming blog post if you missed whether or not you need winter tires - even if you have a 4WD or AWD vehicle.

Everyone has questions about or objections to getting winter tires. As with most information, you hear a lot of different things, so we’ve decided to give you some answers to some common questions or objection that we’ve heard a lot before. If you have any more, please comment below and we’ll get back to you ASAP!

Need help deciding which tire is right for you? Check out our tire selector guide here.

Common Winter Tire Objections & Answers

What if my car has traction control? Traction control isn’t designed to actually give you better traction; it’s meant to limit your acceleration based on the traction of your tires. The only way to get more traction and “traction control” is to get tires that meet those standards.

What if my car has ABS? ABS works more or less like traction control, except that it limits your braking depending on the traction of your tires. Your ABS system will work best with optimum tire grip.

Aren’t snow tires expensive? Snow tires are actually one of the more economical purchases you can make. This is true in part because while you’re using your snow tires, you’re not killing the wear and tread on your summer or all-season tires in winter conditions, and also because as you can imagine, getting into a fender bender or driving off of the course of the road is much pricier than a set of tires.

FAQs About Winter Tires

How much do snow tires cost? Well, through Dec. 31, 2012 we’re happy to offer you $70 off if you are buying all four tires. Generally, the range in price depends hugely on what size you’re getting and what type. Snow tires start at roughly $90 each and can be up to $200 depending on the size of your vehicle and what you’re looking for.

How long do they last? It depends on how well they’re taken care of and how much you drive, but they should last for at least three winter seasons – many more if you are up to date with your vehicles maintenance. Things like getting your tires rotated, making sure there’s proper pressure and removing them early enough when it gets warmer will all help extend the lifetime of your tires.

Can I just put two on instead of four? It’s best to keep all of your tires equal. Tread design dictates how the wheels handle, so you want all of your tires to be at the same level. Otherwise, you lose acceleration, braking and overall control on snowy roads.

How do I order them? Just give us a call! We’d be happy to help you order them through our parts department, or you can always ask about winter tires when you’re in for service.

How much does it cost to get them put on? Our winter changeover special that is ongoing through Dec. 31, 2012 is $69.95 for 16” tires, $89.95 for 17’ and $109.95 for 18’. This special includes tire dismount, mounting of winter tires, computer balance and a wheel torque to factory specifications.

When should I get them put on? In Vermont we typically get snow in October or early November, so it’s a really good idea to get it done before then so you’re prepared, and not stuck on the side of the road when we have an out-of-nowhere blizzard (but that never happens, right?). It’s also a good idea to get them done early because service departments (like us) offer amazing specials during this time of year (like ours). As time goes on these specials usually wane and prices usually go up (not ours though, we’ll be keeping our special through Dec. 31, 2012).

Do you sell studded tires? We don’t have them on site, but we’d be more than happy to order them for you and have them shipped to our store.

Winter is Coming: Do I Need Winter Tires?

I have AWD or 4WD, do I really need winter tires?

View your complete guide to winter tires here, and other tire questions answered below. Remember: comment on the bottom of this post, telling us what character from which show is pictured to the right. Commenting will enter your name in to win $100 towards a new set of winter tires from Burlington Hyundai.

A very common misconception is that if you have an AWD or 4WD vehicle you don’t need winter tires. However, driving in winter conditions isn’t about the power of your vehicle – it’s about traction. Stopping, starting and cornering are controlled primary by the tires; a 4WD will accelerate more quickly in the snow, but when it comes to stopping and cornering it’s the same as any other vehicle. For the torque system in a larger vehicle to be effective in winter conditions, it needs to have snow tires to back it up.

“A 2WD vehicle will perform safely and securely in snow with the proper snow tires mounted on all four wheels. Comparison tests performed by automotive-enthusiast magazines in the snow have shown that a 2WD vehicle with snow tires on all four wheels will outperform a 4WD vehicle with regular tires,” according to Forbes Auto.

I know that seems hard to believe, but here is a video that does a great job of showing the exact differences.

The same goes for AWD vehicles; they’re extremely effective off the mark with accelerating since you have the power of all four tires going for you to start, but they’re less effective when it comes to stopping and maneuvering. While driving an AWD vehicle is definitely better than a RWD in the snow, putting snow tires on that AWD vehicle is absolutely the best bet.

Also, 4WD vehicles often come with wider tires, which don’t dig through snow as efficiently due to the wider surface area; this can cause the vehicle to slip around when steering and braking. And as you know, 4WD vehicles are typically larger and do not have the naturally ability to brake as quickly as smaller cars.

Studded Tires, Winter Tires or All-Season Tires?

It’s that time of year again; the weather is getting chillier and the leaves are changing to beautiful oranges and reds. Fall is a wonderful season to experience in Vermont, but it also means that it’s nearly time for you to change your tires over. This time of year is typically when people go into mental debates about why they need winter tires or why they’re not going to get them this year. And that’s why we’re here! We wanted to post some general information and frequently asked questions regarding winter tires so that you can make the most informed decision possible about whether or not to purchase winter tires this season. For today's blog, we've got a comparison of your different tire options, and next week we'll go into some FAQs and explain common obligations people usually have with purchasing winter tires!

If by the end you're still having trouble deciding, be sure to check out our Tire Selector Guide here!

Which tire is best for winter driving?

There are two general types of winter tires; studded, and not studded; there are many variations of both studded and not-studded tires but those are the two main types you’re going to be deciding between. So here are some pros and cons for both:

Studded Tires

Studded tires are best only on ice and when temperatures are near freezing. The pros are that they stop faster than any other tire on ice in freezing temperatures, and they “chew up” the ice on the roads, which benefits both you and other drivers driving on the same icy roads. The negative side of that is while they chew up ice, they’re also not very good for the roads you’re driving on if there isn’t any ice present. Studded tires aren’t as effective as regular winter tires on snowy or slushy roads, they’re illegal in a few starts and they’re pretty noisy.

Winter Tires

As for winter tires; they perform well in all winter conditions, not just ice. Since they have that deeper tread, slush and snow are able to fall out of the tire as it rotates, thus causing less build up. The noise level is about the same for winter tires as it is for all-season tires, but a drawback can be that their regulation is misleading – it’s best to buy your winter tires from a trusted source so that you’re clear on the quality of your tires.

So which one is best for you? Since studded tires are better designed to handle icy roads, which are more prominent on the coast, you’re probably better off using regular winter tires unless you live in a place that generally has sleek icy roads as opposed to snowy and slushy. If you appreciate less noise, you should definitely go with winter tires, and since we live in a place with very unpredictable autumn and spring weather, winter tires are usually the way to go.

All-Season Tires

I saved all-season tires for last because they’re an entirely different kind of tire. All-season tires are designed to perform in, well, all seasons, meaning that they’re mostly effective in most driving conditions. They are a type of “tire compromise”. All-season tires do particularly well in rain and on dry roads, but they’re not prepared for the winter because the rubber that’s on them isn’t designed for less than 45 degree weather. When you drive in the cold, the rubber on all-seasons gets hard, making it easier for you to slide on the road in cold temperatures, as opposed to winter tires, which have rubber that keeps soft in the coldest temperatures. As Edmunds says, “think of all-season as sneakers and snow tires as heavy duty boots,” you can certainly walk down the icy, snowy driveway and sneakers, but it’s going to be a lot easier and a lot safer in winter boots.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe ads Turbo Power, Replaces V6

Hyundai just launched the new Santa Fe on Aug. 20, showcasing both sizes; the five-passenger (similar as the 2012), and the new, longer-wheelbase, seven-passenger model.

Six speed transmissions are standard on both models, but the engines differ slightly. The five-passenger is powered by one of two four-cylinder engines. The 2.4 liter has an increased output of 190 hp, which is up from 175 in the previous model, and a fuel economy of 22 MPG city, 33 highway. Its fuel economy beats out the new Toyota RAV4, 2012 Chevy Equinox and 2013 Ford Escape.

The Santa Fe Sport offers a 2.0 liter, 264 hp turbo engine - this model gets an impressive 31 MPG highway. The seven-passenger Santa Fe has a 3.3 liter engine with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque.

"Basically, it looks a little meaner and a little more angular than last year's model. The hexagonal grille is accented by lighting at the corners, similar to the Genesis coupe. The rear looks a bit cleaner, with the side character lines swooping over the taillights. A small roof spoiler sits on the rear hatch," according to Auto Week.

10 Tips for a Fabulous Work Day

So I'm sure Monday would be a more appropriate day to post these 10 tips for a fabulous work day, but I just found them! Here is an article from Yahoo that has some great pointers on how to get more enjoyment out of your work. So if you're feeling a slump, or are already staring at the clock today, check 'em out and see if any can brighten up your schedule :).

1. Start with 15 minutes of positive input. Start your day by either reading, listening to or thinking of positivity. It's easier to maintain a positive attitude throughout the day if you have these thoughts to refer back to.

2. Tie your work to your life's goals. Remember there is always a deeper reason that you go to work every day. Whether it's supporting your family, changing the world or just helping your customers; stay in tune with the bigger reason why you're there and that today is the day to accomplish more of your goals.

3. Use your commute wisely. Don't just listen to the news or think about stuff that's stressing you out. This is your time! Put on your favorite music and get yourself excited for the day.

4. Stick a smile on your face. Research shows that even forced smiles genuinely reduce stress and make you happier.

5. Express a positive mood. If someone asks how you're doing, instead of just answering blandly, say something like "Fantastic!" or "I'm having a wonderful day!"

6. Do what's important first. Manage your time so that you do the most important tasks first thing in the day. They say 20 percent of your time produces 80 percent of your results.

7. Avoid negative people. Well if you follow steps one through six, you'll probably find that these people are avoiding you anyway.

8. Don't work long hours. Of course there are jobs where you simply must work long hours, but working too much can actually decrease productivity in your life and work.

9. Wind down and relax. When you're out of work, fill the rest of your evening with activities that are completely non-work related. Don't take your work home with you! Have some time and enjoy the relaxation.

10. End your day with 15 minutes of gratitude. Before you go to sleep, get out something to write on and jot down everything you were grateful for today. You'll sleep better and be more ready for tomorrow, plus it'll be nice to go back and read later!

11. Shop for a Hyundai. Just kidding! But if you wanna check 'em out, view our online inventory here. ;)

Now I know some of these may seem like a stretch, so try them for a day and see how you feel. I bet it'll be a good one. Now let's go get Friday!

Hyundai Sonata Receives New Fluidic Precision Design

According to an article posted on Automotive Discovery, Hyundai is creating a new design language for their upcoming models called Fluidic Precision. The Hyundai Sonata is first for the new design, but upcoming will be the other popular models as well.

“You’ll see even more maturity with the new Santa Fe, and future cars will feature something we’re internally calling Fluidic Precision, where the forms might be a little less extroverted,” CEO of Hyundai North America John Krafcik said. “You’ll see that with the next Sonata, the design of which has just been frozen.

So what's in store for the newest editions? We're not sure, but we'll keep you updated. Krafcik also touches on the current lawsuit going on with Hyundai's "false" MPG claims on the Elantra. The lawsuit, in case you haven't heard, is due to Hyundai advertising the Elanta's MPGs as only their highway MPGs (a very impressive 40 MPG). It's up to you to decide your opinion, but as Krafcik said, they posted the best fuel economy for the Elantra as their competitors do, which is good enough for me!

Check out our new Hyundai Sonata inventory online if you can't wait for the "Fluidic Precision" design, or click to view our pre-owned Hyundai Sonata inventory here.

Staff Pick: Wine of the Week!

Today we had two wonderful Burlington Hyundai salespeople give their two cents on their favorite wines. First, Ryan Bessery says his favorite is Rock & Vine's Cabernet Sauvignon because it's "got a good taste to it." Ryan isn't a big wine drinker, but Rock & Vine came highly recommended by his Uncle and he was a huge fan once he tried it.

David Lantman says he appreciates any wine that comes from the Alsace region of France; he traveled there, both sampling and loving many of the wines from that region. Alsace wines are typically white, including but not limited to Pinot Gris and Riesling.

We hope you've enjoyed Wine Month with us at Burlington Hyundai Subaru! Fingers crossed for nice weather this weekend and full enjoyment of the Burlington Wine and Food Festival!
